About My Photography

Over the past 45 years, my photography has added new layers to my joy of seeing beauty in unexpected places. Initially, I was drawn to light and shadow, with beauty presenting itself in the geometry and colors of architecture and marine vessels. I have always loved to focus on the lines, angles, and textures of architectural features so that they become more than just a part of a larger structure.  My first solo show was Architectural Abstracts at the EG Photo Gallery in 1992. In addition, I have developed a love for street photography. Surreptitiously capturing images of people in urban settings requires a personal distance from the subject. It wasn’t until I visited Bhutan in 2024, where photographing people without their permission is socially unacceptable, that I began to get physically close to my subjects, asking permission, building trust. In the words of international photographer GMB Akash, “. . . getting close is hard. It asks for courage. It asks for connection. It asks for heart.”  I found myself making personal connections with people who were willing to let themselves be vulnerable, to reveal something personal, to share a moment of understanding.  My photographs touched the human, where eyes begin to speak, where unwritten histories come to life. Thus, I have become a street portrait photographer, traveling the world in search of human beings who are willing to collaborate in the making of thoughtful portraits. My travels have taken me to Cuba, Bolivia, the Philippines, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, Russia, India, Bhutan and Ethiopia. In 2026 I will travel to Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
